Functional Pottery
I began throwing pots about seven years ago. There is something magical about taking a lump of clay and creating an object that is functional, beautiful, and will endure forever. Functional ceramics is a special body of work. No other medium establishes a bond between the artist and the user. You hold the mug in your hands; it warms you, and you take it to your lips. You take your nourishment from the bowl and the plate. The energy and the spirit of its making moves to you.
In the last few years i have focused mainly on wood-fired vessels. This is how pots were first fired, ions ago. The flame leaves its mark; it embraces the pot, transforms it, and leaves its unique identity. Every unloading of the kiln is a surprise; you must relinquish expectations and give yourself over to the fire. Every pot should show evidence of how it was made. Like a good wine, in wood firing, you understand this pot came from somewhere, and it can never be made again.
I generally alter most every piece I throw, seeking to get some movement in the pot. Mostly, I want them to dance.
