BRIAN CRETE was born in Lowell, MA and currently resides in the city of Cambridge/Boston. In 1999, he received a BFA with a concentration in painting from the University of Massachusetts Lowell under the direction of Professor Brenda Atwood Pinardi. Although figurative painting is the primary focus of his work, additional interests in photography and theatrical scenic design have been important in his creativity. In addition, Brian works at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston, MA. Brian has worked with many talented individuals since his arrival to the city, including Dennis Hurley and 7 Fluid Oz. Productions LLP, for which he reproduced the famed Davinci portrait, Mona Lisa (with a twist of course) for the parody, The Albino Code. His works have been exhibited over the years, including the Boston Biennial 2009, sponsored by the Atlantic Works Gallery in E. Boston and JP To ME 2010 in Jamaica Plain, MA. Brian is actively involved at the Footlight Club, America’s Oldest Community Theater in Jamaica Plain, MA as volunteer set designer/painter/builder. Credits include Singin’ in the Rain, Annie, Gypsy and most recently And Then There Were None (shared EMACT Distinguished Award and Special Honor (DASH) for Best Set Dressing in a Play) and Oliver! (DASH nominated for Best Set Design in a Musical. He is also a participant in the Jamaica Plain Open Studios and a supporter of the Watertown Children’s Theater. ARTIST STATEMENT For me art is medicinal. It is both my spirit guide and my release. It serves as an expression of my thoughts, joys and sorrows. As an artist my passion is to create from the heart, to tell a story or to express an emotion. My art is subjective like any other. It is not meant to be liked or disliked but to evoke a spirit within, to allow one to question the meaning and to interpret their own.
