The initial experience of my painting is pre-lingual; paint and form act directly upon the nervous system. A sensation of color should leave a taste in one's mouth; pictorial rhythms should land like body blows. The physical phenomenon of the painting leads to the image. I paint imagined landscapes. They invoke light and gravity yet do not appear as any place one has seen. They are ostensibly invented; but how my pictures are strange is not as important as how they are strangely familiar. The imagery is not so much made up as it is calibrated to the shape of memory or is tuned like a piano to strike a certain chord. The colors and imagery set the stage for a space, something both physical and something else. It is imbued with a state of being, a presence. Landscape space is ordinarily opposed to or outside of the Self; but in my paintings the void is a mirror. www.alfung.com
