Photography
Twenty years ago I made a photograph of a pair of pigeons nesting in the rotted eaves of a Victorian townhouse on the south edge of Downtown St. Louis. They were living in place that was about to disappear. In the last twenty years I have been documenting that which is disappearing: a neighborhood undergoing urban renewal; the architectural remnants of U.S. 66; the main streets of Mid-western farm towns; prairie mills and churches; a changing wheat field; the wetlands of the Mississippi River. However, most recently I have been photographing rocks.
I work in the context of large scale projects. This gives my work focus, and allows me leaves me free to explore compositional themes within the context of the project. Occassionally, I will explore the same composition over and over in order to study the play of light on the landscape.
